1.4 Associations Relevant to Mining in Canada

Besides MiHR, MAC and CIM, Canada has many other associations related to the mining industry. Major associations include:

  • Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC)
  • Yukon Chamber of Mines
  • Northwest Territories and Nunavut Chamber of Mines
  • Mining Association of British Columbia
  • Alberta Chamber of Resources
  • Saskatchewan Mining Association
  • Mining Association of Manitoba
  • Ontario Mining Association
  • Quebec Mining Association
  • New Brunswick Mining Association
These associations can be consulted to understand the regulatory environment associated with developing a mine in a certain jurisdiction, to obtain technical resources, and to learn of other valuable groups associated with mining. In Canada, many of these associations are provincial.

One particular Canada wide association, the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences, released a booklet (CFES, 2018) to describe the contributions of geoscientist to the Canadian society. Similar benefits would be recognized in any country. Also, this CFES website describes the requirements to be licensed as a professional geoscientist which is dependent upon the Canadian jurisdiction. Likewise, Engineers Canada (2018) can be consulted on how to become a licensed engineer in Canada. MiHR (Mining Industry Human Resources Council, 2018) describes the bulk of the careers in mining Canada and provides information specifically for newcomers to Canada about the challenges that immigrants might encounter in the mining industry. Mining requires technical competence.
